Creating Gender Affirming School Environments: What Leaders Need to Know and Do ~ Mara Iverson | VT-HEC

August 14, 2020 @ 8:30 am - 2:30 pm

| $135

Target Audience: School administrators, nurses, directors and coordinators of guidance, health, mental health, athletics, special education, etc.

Education administrators and others in leadership or supervisory roles have a unique and critical role in ensuring the development and maintenance of safe and inclusive environments for all students.

Vermont’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey data continues to paint a clear and alarming picture of the disproportionate rate at which transgender and gender-expansive youth are among our most vulnerable. Join in this day-long workshop as we lean into the who, what, where, when, why, and most importantly how of creating affirming environments for all Vermont’s children and youth across a spectrum of gender.

We’ll listen to youth narratives, work through case studies, and examine current policies, laws and best practices in K-12 settings. We’ll send you off with a road map for how to bring your staff, students and families alongside you as you foster a climate and culture that remains current with an ever- changing gender landscape.

Mara Iverson is Director of Education at Outright Vermont, a statewide LGBTQ+ youth advocacy organization. She has worked at universities in Pennsylvania, Texas, and Vermont and has 15 years of LGBTQ+ advocacy and education experience. Mara also works in advocating for racial justice and understanding and managing implicit bias.
