Guardians of Peace and Planet: A demonstration against the F35s

August 4, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Burlington International Airport

| Free

This fun and family-friendly event/demonstration will protest the F35s that are scheduled to come to the Burlington International Airport in Vermont this fall. Attendees of all ages are encouraged to make personal shields with various messages and to come dressed as “alternative” super heroes of their own making/imagination (Green Man, Green Woman, Water Spirit, Clean Air God/dess, Earth Maiden, World Citizen, Peacenik, Conservationist, Environmentalist, Petition Man, Petition Woman, Conscientious Objector, Conflict Resolution Specialist, Mediator, Human Rights Advocate, Teacher, etc.).  In our country, we honor the military. We also need to glorify the peacemakers, those of us who work for economic justice, people, peace, the planet, the environment, and more.

“Bunker Bob” will serve as the emcee for a program that will feature anti-nuclear messages along with information about the health impacts of the F35s from noise pollution to PFAS contaminants. Bread and Puppet Theater will provide dramatic puppets for the protest.  Free face painting for all who come dressed as a super hero.  Tom Nielsen, Music for Social Change, will perform along with a number of other local musicians. Nielsen provides a voice for those who believe in the power of folk music to effect change. His award-winning songs of humor and compassion have been performed in 21 countries on five continents. His lyrics are celebrated for their sophistication, political astuteness, and wit. Combining art with activism, he has appeared with Medea Benjamin, Cynthia McKinney, Amy Goodman, Cindy Sheehan, Cesar Chavez, Noam Chomsky, Ralph Nader, Ray McGovern, Howard Zinn, David Cobb, many others.

All interested groups, families, and individuals are invited to attend this fun, educational, and visual event sponsored by a large number of local peace, social justice, and environmental groups in Vermont. Our goal is to get the media to pay attention to us, featuring us on the news and in other media outlets. Bring your own lawn chair, water, umbrella, and protest signs/banners.

A free shield and  sign making workshop will be held on Saturday, August 3rd from 10 AM to 2 PM at Shaw’s, 570 Shelburne Rd, Burlington, VT 05401.  We’ll be in the first floor meeting room. We’ll have cardboard and arts and crafts supplies.  Bring some of your own supplies to help us out.
