Child Protection in Context: Understanding the bigger picture for Vermont’s children, youth, and families
Join our free weekly series of conversations exploring the greater context in which our child protection system exists. Each week will be focused on a different topic designed to help attendees better understand how Vermont’s unique landscape shapes experiences and outcomes for everyone involved and take steps toward achieving a more responsive, child-centered system.
9-16 | Owning our history: Can Vermont’s child protection system be anti-racist? Join Allison Gilbreath, Policy Associate at Voices for Virginia’s Children, as we acknowledge our country and our state’s racist history. and identify important next steps to center BIPOC children, families, and individuals in systemic reform.
9-23 | Trends in Vermont child protection: Bringing in stakeholders to support the journey toward equity. Join Lynn Tiede of the National CHAMPS campaign as she facilitates a conversation about trends within VT’s child protection system and presents a series of policy recommendations to support families (including families of origin, kinship families, and foster families).
9-30 | Data: A key tool for helping children and families. In this session, led by a national expert on integrative data systems and DCF staff, we’ll examine why investing in a new data system will give Vermont the opportunity to communicate more effectively, create transparency, understand how we are doing, and improve our ability to serve children well.
10-7 | The Office of Child Advocate: Navigating a healthy child protection system. One of the most common complaints that Voices hears about Vermont’s child protection system is that it is lacking a layer of accountability. This session will focus on the creation of an Office of Child and Family Advocate and ways in which this resource could help drive reform for Vermont’s child protection system.
